This corpus is derived from the Manual of Patent Examining Procedure (MPEP), published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

The MPEP is a work of the United States Government and is in the public domain per 17 U.S.C. § 105.

What was done

  1. All 778 MPEP section pages and 13 non-section pages (appendices, front matter, form paragraphs, subject-matter index) were downloaded from the USPTO website as HTML.
  2. HTML was converted to clean Markdown preserving heading hierarchy, cross-reference links, case name italics, statute citations, tables, and form paragraph callouts.
  3. External USPTO URLs were rewritten to portable internal Markdown links so the corpus is self-linked.
  4. Appendix L (35 U.S.C.) and Appendix R (37 C.F.R.) were split into individual per-statute and per-rule files for direct navigation.

What was not changed

The substantive text of the MPEP, statutes, and regulations has not been altered. All link rewrites and structural changes are mechanical transformations of the published source material. No editorial commentary, annotations, or interpretive content has been added.
